Book Club.

Book Club.

After 6 years and many failed attempts. It has FINALLY happened. I am officially a member of a (great) book club. Honestly, I have been in search of a good book club for years. They are not that easy to come by. I even attempted to start one of my own...it didn't even last 15 minutes. There was this one time I got really mad/fustrated/close to tears (yes, my inner nerd came out) as I dutifully…

Embracing my inner Hip Hop.

I've been wanting to go for months and months. I've been waiting/begging friends to come with me (mostly they are too 'nervous' or it is not their 'thang' - fair enough). I've recently been acting like a gangsta in really inappropriate situations (ie. my response to requests at work - "Sorry gurl I can't follow up... ain't nobody got time for dat" or to my barista...."your kicks are soooo fresh son"). And the real clincher….I've been…

CAR-ma

CAR-ma

Yes, I drive a yellow car (ok, it is more a mustard tone) - see my blog post about my car here. In summary I haven't had the best CAR-ma over the years… * Within 10 minutes of learning how to drive (on my L's) I hit a light pole right near a playground….crowds gathered. *  I left my handbrake down and my car rolled down the street and hit my neighbours car at 11pm…

Exhibitionist.

Since I can remember my sisters and I were regularly visited (and dragged) to art galleries and museums. I guess it is just part of having a mum who is a (crazy) artist. From a very young age, my sisters and I were taught how to behave appropriately in galleries- we had to talk quietly (something I really struggled with - admittedly, I still find it hard to whisper....), tread softly and stay close to our…

Finding my way.

Finding my way.

Earlier this week, I spent 20 minutes driving around Surry Hills trying to find the restaurant I was meeting some of my friends. Up one way streets. Down one way streets. The wrong way... down one way streets. Earlier this week, I spent 30 minutes walking around Westfield Shopping mall trying to find the right exit. Up escalators. Down lifts. Accidentally bumping into people as I frantically scanned for exit signs. And for the past…

Birthday…splits.

Birthdays. Yes it is just another day. A personal choice - some prefer to fly 'under the radar' and not let anyone know, some like to throw extravagant parties and some even celebrate it for an entire month in advance (notably, my own mum who was born on the leap year and insists that we celebrate for the entire month of February just to compensate for her not having an actual birth 'day'). Which ever…

Stop. Look. And Listen.

I would love if I could be a full time pedestrian. Never use any other mode of transport. If I could just...walk. Everywhere. I am not the best driver (I failed my driving test 3 times - enough
said). I find the bus really awkward (I seem to always be yelling
'backdoor please'). I am not a confident cyclist (I split my head open
riding a bike down the stairs when I was 4). I don't…

Epic Fail.

Epic Fail.

The time I left my hand brake on and car 'drove itself' down the street hitting my neighbours car. Fail. The time I somehow 'misplaced' my shoes in NYC airport and had to buy, then wear compression socks. Fail. The time I got pulled over my the police for dpoing' caroke' (it was 9am on a Monday morning and they thought I was drink) - this may have been earlier this year…. Fail. And…the time…

What a tool… It’s is ‘Nikita’ not ‘Makita’

Last Friday night…it happened again. Setting: In a Sydney bar, the noise level is very high. Unidentified Man [approaches me]:  "Hey girl, what is your name?" Me: "Nikita" Unidentified Man: "Oh cool, like the power tools…you know, give me my makita back mac?" Me: "No, not Makita…N-I-K-I-T-A" Unidentified Man: "Ohhh like as in La Femme Nikita or [breaks into song] "Hey Nikita is it cold In your little corner of the world" - you know the Elton…

Weave got style…

Follow @bynikita_ and tag #bynikita to win one of my weavings! I really want to take my love for weaving to the next level. I am constantly thinking about it. I look at buildings, clothing, nature and see shapes and colours which I can potentially weave. I imagine living on a farm...surrounded by llama, sheep, camels, yak, possums and vicuna (yes, vicuna) just so I can make my own fresh handspun wool. It is slightly strange... I…

Too many balls. Not enough sleep.

My sleep deprivation is only to get worse over the next few weeks. The FIFA World Cup 2014 started last thursday. I am already obsessed. If someone asked me 5 years ago if I would ever love football as much as I do now…I would have laughed (loudly) in their face. I didn't know anything about the game. And then…one cold winter's night…I turned on the TV and began to watch… The movie "Bend it…

Call me on the landline.

Call me on the landline.

I ate my dessert. I folded and put away my washing away. I organised my weaving yarn. I brushed my hair. I even attempted to brush my teeth. All whilst..... 'on the phone' to my friend. Mobile phones. They have only been around for approx 20 years..but it is hard to imagine life without them. Once step further..the 'hands free' function.  It is apparently 'safer' for your brain. It increases productivity.  It enables multi-tasking to…
