Breaking News.

It has happened five times in the past 3 weeks. No exaggeration. Two iphone screens. Two mugs. One antique bottle (which I bought from NYC). Glass seems to be breaking all around me. I know I am clumsy. But this feels like a joke. I am starting to wonder whether I am carrying around some bad ju-ju vibes or something. The theme of glass re-emerged on Wednesday night. But this time in a more positive…

Pink Finger Buns.

Pink Finger Buns.

Everyday. For 6 months. Always at 4pm. In my final year of school…. I bought a pink icing finger bun on the way home (it HAD to be the one with pink icing). It was a stressful year as I was intensely studying for the HSC exams (yes, I was...and still am a total nerd). But...the routine of buying and consuming a pink finger bun on Turramurra Station offered me total emotional comfort. Forget meditation. Forget…

Peep Show.

My neighbours above can see right into our kitchen. We usually just have friendly neighbour 'banter' from our back garden when they are sitting on their balcony. ...but last week things escalated. The neighbours (4 Canadian guys in their final year of medicine) came over & introduced themselves. Rather than making mundane "small talk", one of the guys just blurted; "You like sweet potato, hey?!". He had obviously noticed my current obsession with sweet potato.…

Dating Disaster…it was well hung.

WAS being the operative word. And by well hung, I am ofcourse referring to a pendant light. His pendant light was well hung...until I broke it. I remember the whole scene like it was yesterday. I was 22 years old. It was only our second date. We decided to play 'bowling' on the Wii. Error Number 1. I didn't put on the wrist strap. Error Number 2. It seemed like an unnecessary precaution at the…

Getting SID faced.

Getting SID faced.

For the last 3 days I have been getting absolutely SID faced. No it is not a spelling error - SID is the abbreviation for the Sydney's number one design event "Sydney Indesign" (This event is created/run by Indesign Group - the company I work for). Although....admittedly, every night last week I was also getting quite sh*t faced too. Don't judge...we had reason to celebrate! It has taken over a year to organise this event.…

YES, I drive….a yellow car.

OK, I promise this will be my last post on NYC. Plunged into the routine of daily life, my adventure in the big apple is now a distant memory. Thank god, for Jay Z and re-runs of Sex and The City ...they will keep the dream alive! Upon exiting JFK airport the first thing I saw was a yellow taxi. I grinned to myself like an idiot. I love NYC taxi's. For me, they are…

Nix’s Guide to NYC…

I just spent the last 10 days in New York City. I had the intention of embracing the persona of a  'New York struggling writer' and using the wi-fi at a local café, wearing thick-rimmed glasses and writing blog posts… But between the hip hop dance class, the sickening consumption of cream cheese bagels and my adventures to Harlem's Apollo Theatre….my writing fantasy did not come into fruition. It was honestly the trip of a…

Concrete Jungle – where dreams are made…

I came face to face with concrete very early on in life. And not by choice.   At age 2, (in true ‘red bull’ spirit) I attempted to ride my tricycle down a flight of stairs …. and laded face first onto the concrete landing.   I split my head open and still today have a scar on my forehead. (No.. its not cool like Harry Potter's...its actually blue in colour and just acts…

New York Bound.

Jay- Z. Salt-N-Pepa. De La Soul. Busta Rhymes. Girls. Sex and the City. Gossip Girl. MOMA. Guggenheim. The Met. A significant number of my favourite things in life are from New York City. When I was studying in Boston, I used to catch the $10 'Lucky Star' bus to NYC (it picked you up from Boston Chinatown & dropped you off at NYC Chinatown - with a very dodgy stop off at some chinese restaurant…

My sister has gone bananas.

My sister has gone bananas.

She may be younger to me, but in so many ways I look up to her. She is ambitious. She has patience. She is disciplined. She is gorgeous (both inside & out…she is commonly compared to 'Frida Pinto'). And now, she has just landed her DREAM job – she is going to be a maternity & peadetrics dietician in one of the best hospitals in Brisbanel. QLD the state of Bananas. Quite fitting really. Sounds 100%…

Getting my ‘Indian’ On.

Last weekend was very 'indian-centric'. It started on Friday, we had an International food day at work. It was a sensational lunch. Although post-lunch productivity did hit an all time low as we all battled with an onset of food coma. I made a BIG bowl of an Indian Street food dish called Beil Puri (Click here to learn how to make it). The dish consists of spiced rice puffs with potatoes, chickpeas, sweet tamarind…

Self Reflection.

I came home last Saturday night exhausted. I hadn’t even been on the dance floor. I hadn’t even consumed lots of wine (ok, maybe just a little) I had just been to dinner with ‘ma gurls’ and laughed……and laughed….and laughed. I was exhausted from laughing. If there is one thing I truly love in life – it is laughing until it hurts. I love that feeling of gasping for breath. The stabbing pain in your…
